Definition and Usage

The <i> tag renders text in italics.

The <i> tag defines parts of text as different from the rest, and renders it as italic text.

Use the <i> tag when no other element can be used, such as <b>, <cite>, <dfn>, <em>, <q>, <small>, <strong>

Differences Between HTML 4.01 and HTML5

None, but in HTML 4.01, there was an understanding that you should use CSS to make italic text. This is still the case, but in HTML5 you should use the <i> tag to define some part of a text as a certain type, not only how it renders in the layout.
